    Semidiscrete least squares methods for linear convection-diffusion problem

    AbstractIn this paper, some approximate methods for solving linear convection-diffusion problems are presented. The methods consist in discretizing with respect to time and solving the resulting convection dominated elliptic problem for fixed time by least squares finite element methods. An analysis of least squares approximations is given, including optimal order estimates for piecewise polynomial approximation spaces. The model problem considered is the time-dependent convection dominated linear convection-diffusion equation. Numerical results for the Burgers' equation will also be presented

    A nonlinear weighted least-squares finite element method for Stokes equations

    AbstractThe paper concerns a nonlinear weighted least-squares finite element method for the solutions of the incompressible Stokes equations based on the application of the least-squares minimization principle to an equivalent first order velocity–pressure–stress system. Model problem considered is the flow in a planar channel. The least-squares functional involves the L2-norms of the residuals of each equation multiplied by a nonlinear weighting function and mesh dependent weights. Using linear approximations for all variables, by properly adjusting the importance of the mass conservation equation and a carefully chosen nonlinear weighting function, the least-squares solutions exhibit optimal L2-norm error convergence in all unknowns. Numerical solutions of the flow pass through a 4 to 1 contraction channel will also be considered

    Important prognostic factors for the long-term survival of lung cancer subjects in Taiwan

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This study used a large-scale cancer database in determination of prognostic factors for the survival of lung cancer subjects in Taiwan.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Total of 24,910 subjects diagnosed with lung cancer was analysed. Survival estimates by Kaplan-Meier methods. Cox proportional-hazards model estimated the death risk (hazard ratio (HR)) for various prognostic factors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prognostic indicators associated with a higher risk of lung cancer deaths are male gender (males versus females; HR = 1.07, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.03–1.11), males diagnosed in later periods (shown in 1991–1994 versus 1987–1990; HR = 1.13), older age at diagnosis, large cell carcinoma (LCC)/small cell carcinoma (SCC), and supportive care therapy over chemotherapy. The overall 5-year survival rate for lung cancer death was significantly poorer for males (21.3%) than females (23.6%). Subjects with squamous cell carcinoma (SQCC) and treatment by surgical resection alone had better prognosis. We find surgical resections to markedly increase 5-year survival rate from LCC, decreased risk of death from LCC, and no improved survival from SCC.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Gender and clinical characteristics (i.e. diagnostic period, diagnostic age, histological type and treatment modality) play important roles in determining lung cancer survival.</p

    Calcitriol Suppresses Warburg Effect and Cell Growth in Human Colorectal Cancer Cells

    Increasing lines of evidence indicate that the biologically active form of vitamin D, calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3), prevents cancer progression by reducing cell proliferation, increasing cell differentiation, and inhibiting angiogenesis, among other potential roles. Cancer cells in solid tumors preferably undergo the “Warburg effect” to support cell growth by upregulating glycolysis, and the glycolytic intermediates further serve as building blocks to generate biomass. The objective of the current study is to investigate whether calcitriol affects glucose metabolism and cell growth in human colorectal cancer cells. Calcitriol reduced the expression of cyclin D1 and c-Myc. In addition, calcitriol reduced the expression of glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) and key glycolytic enzymes and decreased extracellular acidification rate but increased oxygen consumption rate in human colorectal cancer cells. In a subcutaneous HT29 xenograft NOD/SCID mouse model, the volume and weight of the tumors were smaller in the calcitriol groups as compared with the control group, and the expression levels of GLUT1 and glycolytic enzymes, hexokinase 2 and lactate dehydrogenase A, were also lower in the calcitriol groups in a dose-responsive manner. Our data indicate that calcitriol suppresses glycolysis and cell growth in human colorectal cancer cells, suggesting an inhibitory role of the biologically active form of vitamin D in colorectal cancer progression

    Exotic Amphibians in the Pet Shops of Taiwan

    Pet trade is an important mechanism for introducing alien species. We surveyed a total of 434 pet shops in major cities of Taiwan and found 49 species of alien amphibians belonging to 14 families and 31 genera. Two of the alien species, Rana catesbeiana and Kaloula pulchra, have established in the fields and the other three, Bufo marinus, Xenopus laevis, and Dendrobates auratus, have invasion records in other countries. There were 16 CITES Appendix II species. The most frequently displayed species were the horned frogs, eratophrys spp. And the most abundant species was the American Bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana. We urge the authority of Taiwan establishing regulations on pet trade and enforcing the wildlife conservation law to reduce the risks of alien species invasions
